Working toward the prevention and treatment of gynecologic cancer

Hosted at the Convention Centre Dublin, the Annual Global Meeting of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society brought together world-renowned experts, clinicians, and researchers dedicated to advancing gynecologic (cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar) cancer care and improving the lives of those affected by these diseases.

The conference featured cutting-edge research presentations, collaborative workshops, and educational sessions designed to enhance clinical practice and patient care. Pre-congress activities included a Patient Advocacy Summit, a Nursing Symposium, and a hands-on Pre-Invasive Training Workshop to teach clinicians practical skills in treating pre-invasive cervical disease. At the Patient Advocacy Summit, gynecologic cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and advocates gathered for a full day of networking and educational programming aimed at empowering individuals to advocate more effectively for themselves and others.

The conference was supported by the Dublin Convention Bureau and organised by the International Gynecologic Cancer Society in collaboration with the Irish Society of Gynaecological Oncology.
 

Some of the key highlights and social impact outcomes of the Annual Global Meeting of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society include:

• The diverse faculty representing over 30 countries and multiple disciplines from nursing and palliative care to surgery, clinical and medical oncology, ensured that all important topics in the field were well-represented including varied points of view and novel information.
• All major sessions were opened by local gynecologic cancer patients sharing their personal experiences with cancer. Their presence and perspective highlight the social and human impact of medical research.
• Delegates from over 80 countries participated in a wide variety of networking events, experiencing the local culture and connecting with international colleagues.
• The Presidential Plenary focused on cervical cancer elimination efforts with leaders from Ireland, Nigeria, and Japan sharing insights and challenges on HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening programs in their countries.

 

 

The Annual Global Meeting of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society had a strong impact on healthcare in Ireland, including:

1. Among the 2,052 international delegates, the 289 (14%) from Ireland returned to their clinical practices with new information and insights gathered during the three-day educational conference.
2. The Nursing Symposia, which was supported by Ireland’s National Cancer Control Programme educated nurses on a variety of topics specific to caring for patients with gynecologic malignancies and allowed them to learn best practices from nurses around the world. 80% of those in attendance hailed from Ireland.
3. About 50% of the patients, survivors, and advocates attending the Patient Advocacy Summit were from Ireland, fostering connection and solidarity among the patient advocates, creating opportunities for stronger and more cohesive advocacy efforts in the future.

Established in 1987 as a not-for-profit organisation, the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) unites the interdisciplinary gynecologic cancer care team, including gynecologic oncologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, allied health professionals, and other clinicians and researchers dedicated to gynecologic oncology research and patient care.
