The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the trade association for the world’s airlines, representing some 250 airlines, or 84% of total air traffic. Its AGM is a unique and exclusive industry forum, which brings together the world’s aviation leading figures. Every sector from the air transport industry is represented; airlines, governments, regulators, regional airlines associations, airports, ANSPs (Air Navigation Service Providers), manufacturers, IT providers, major media outlets and many other stakeholders and partners.
Why do you think Ireland was successful in securing this event?
Ireland is positioned as the largest buyer of jet aircraft and engines via the aircraft leasing industry, and the many Irish people in leadership roles across the industry made the country a logical host for such an influential group of airline leaders.
Can you describe what support you received?
I couldn’t have done it alone, and must acknowledge everyone – individuals, companies and government agencies like Fáilte Ireland (who I received both practical and financial support from). They all supported me in winning the various bids and worked tirelessly in delivering outstanding service and experience to the thousands of international delegates during their time in Ireland.
What are the benefits of becoming a Conference Ambassador?
It’s provided me with an increased profile, enhanced reputation in aviation, and opportunities to engage with international colleagues and develop new relationships. By becoming a Conference Ambassador, many doors have opened and I have been invited to bid for and host a further five international conferences for Ireland over the next three years. If, with Fáilte Ireland’s support, I can bring these conferences home, I’ll have delivered approximately 6,500 aviation delegates with a value of over €9m to the Irish economy.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of hosting an international conference?
I would encourage anyone who is influential to use it and become a Conference Ambassador. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the international delegates coming to our country and having a great time here. Be bold and brave, go out there and tell the world how good we are at delivering business conferences.
