The 16th European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) is the largest and most prestigious Information Systems Conference in Europe.
The conference began on June 8th with a welcome reception and pre conference registration and continued until June 11th. It featured 213 papers, 6 panel discussions and 2 keynote speakers. The main objective of the social programme was to provide delegates with an unforgettable, enjoyable and memorable experience of Irish Culture and the “Galway experience”.

I was returning to academia having been out of it for essentially ten years – I was Vice-President here in Maynooth since 1998. This was a major event to bring in to Galway, with approximately 400 delegates coming in for 2-3 days with the majority staying on as leisure tourists, further supporting the tourism economy in the West. Not only did this conference profile NUI Galway but also the Galway region and placed us on the international conferencing map.

The highlight of the conference for me was probably the conference opening when there were a good 600 people sitting in the O’Reilly Hall looking up at our plenary speakers and applauding and that’s when it first became real.

Meet in Ireland was very helpful with financial support. I drew on the Meet in Ireland website among others for documentation on Dublin and Ireland and getting to Ireland.

The WSAVA and FECAVA challenge was to deliver the 33rd Annual World Conference of WSAVA for its members, comprising an extensive scientific programme, containing no less than 28 streams with over 266 speaker presentations and an exhibition of 135 stands.

ISqua is a non profit, independent organisation, with members in over 70 countries. In 2008 the ISqua International headquarters relocated to Dublin and a decision was taken by ISqua to once again hold their annual conference here in 2009.
