History Teachers Association Meeting and Site Visit to Historic Walled City of Derry
A keen interest in the past of the historic Walled City of Londonderry was evident when a group 50 members from the History Teachers Association of Ireland (HTAI) visited the city in February 2010.
The HTAI has 500 members and encourages the development of best practices in the teaching of history by keeping Irish history teachers in contact with new historical research and new approaches to education.
As Londonderry features prominently on the Republic of Ireland’s Secondary School, History Leaving Certificate Curriculum, the Derry Visitor and Convention Bureau and Derry City Council co-ordinated a weekend of site visits and a conference focusing on history topics relevant to Derry City.
Tourism Development Officer with Derry City Council, Mary Blake stated that the Derry City Council were delighted to have the delegation from the HTAI visiting the city.
"We are very happy to welcome members of the HTAI to our city. Educational tourism is a growing sector and there is huge potential to increase visitor numbers through developments like this" she said.
Aoife Thomas, Business and Leisure Tourism Executive with the Derry Visitor and Convention Bureau said "We were delighted to be involved with the HTAI conference. Derry has a wealth of history and culture to be explored and this visit was a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the city to the HTAI members.
